Why do many parents do so many things to have smart kids?

I've heard of practices like sitting your kids in front of the tv to watch BabyEinstein etc. Why are parent's doing so much to have a smart kid? Back in the day, healthy diets were all parents were concerned with during pregnancy...now you have to play them Mozart. Any ideas?
